HORTICULTURE OUTDOOR LAB PROJECT AWARDED $5,000 GRANT

The support behind Lakewood High’s new Horticulture Outdoor Learning Lab continues to grow. The project, which benefitted from the Lakewood Garden Club’s super successful fund-raising efforts, recently received a $5,000 grant from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.

HIGH SCHOOL ARTISTS WIN TOP REGIONAL AWARD

As it does each year, Lakewood City Schools has a number of young artists that have been recognized for their artistic talent in the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards national competition. Three Lakewood High students were honored with the top award - Gold Key Winner - in the Cuyahoga County Region and will have their artwork judged on the national level next month.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSICIANS TO JOIN HONORS ENSEMBLES

Lakewood is host this year to the Ohio Music Education Association’s District IV Middle School Honors Festival and the district’s two middle schools will be well-represented at the event. The festival is February 25 and begins at 4 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium. Choir, band and orchestra honors ensembles comprised of some of the region’s best middle school musicians will perform in this free concert.

BARNSTORMERS' "LARAMIE PROJECT: 10 YRS. LATER" ON STAGE JAN. 26-28

The LHS Barnstormers will stage, "The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later," Janury 26-28 at 8 p.m. in the high school’s Tryout Theater. In 2003 the Lakewood High School Barnstormers Drama Club produced the thought-provoking play, "The Laramie Project."

GARFIELD TEAM TOPS CLASSROOM OF CHAMPIONS' REGIONAL ROUND

A team of Garfield students proved its academic prowess as it ran away with first place in a regional round of the Classroom of Champions academic team competition held at St. Edward High School earlier this month.

HIGH SCHOOL TO HOLD SCHEDULING INFO MEETING FOR PARENTS

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, the Lakewood High Guidance Department will hold informational sessions for parents on course selection for their student for the 2012-2013 school year. Some new policies have been instituted and counselors will be there to explain as well as to answer any questions. The meeting for parents of incoming 9th graders is 7-8 p.m. and for 10th-12th graders from 8-9 p.m., both in Lecture Hall 2.

JAZZ BANDS TO HIGHLIGHT BIG BAND CONCERT FEB. 1

If you are into jazz, than you won't want to miss the LHS Big Band Jazz Festival, to be held Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium. The host LHS Jazz Band will welcome Fairview High's Jazz Band and special guest, the Baldwin-Wallace Jazz Ensemble under the direction if saxophone professor Greg Banazak, who will join the LHS Jazz Band as a soloist. Tickets are $3 adults, $2 seniors and $1 for students.

GARFIELD 8TH GRADER TO PLAY IN UNIVERSITY HONORS BAND

Congratulations to Garfield Middle School 8^th Grade Band student Tess Marjanovic, who is under the direction of Band Director Julie Tabaj, for being accepted to participate in the Bowling Green State University Middle School Honors Band. She will travel to BGSU on Friday, Jan. 20 for an all day rehearsal and a performance on Saturday afternoon.

SUPERINTENDENT ANNOUNCES COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MEETINGS

As the Lakewood City Schools enters 2012 facing many opportunities and challenges, Superintendent Jeff Patterson has scheduled a series of community engagement meetings to inform citizens about the goals of the district, its financial standing, and to solicit the input of the community on solving the significant fiscal issues the district faces. The first one will be Wed., Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at Hayes Elementary School.

MIDDLE SCHOOLS NOW OPEN FOR WALKERS IN EVENING

Both Harding Middle School (16601 Madison Ave.) and Garfield Middle School (13114 Detroit Ave.) are now available for walkers to get in out of the cold. Walking will be available Monday through Thursday from 5-9 p.m. at both schools, although times and dates are subject to change. The schools will be closed on Jan. 16 and Feb. 20 for the holidays.
