LHS' WAGNER NAMED OHIO PRINCIPAL OF YEAR

Lakewood High School principal Dr. William W. Wagner has been chosen as Ohio’s MetLife/NASSP High School Principal of the Year by the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators. Dr. Wagner has led Lakewood High since 2003 and joined LHS as a House Principal in 2001. As Ohio Principal of the Year, Dr. Wagner will now be eligible for the MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year Award and will be recognized for his Ohio honor at OASSA’s fall conference in October.

FORMER BOARD PRESIDENT GIVEN OSBA HONOR

Former Board of Education President Matthew John Markling has received the 2012 Ohio School Boards Association Award of Achievement. Of only 3,400 Board members in Ohio, only 93 receive this honor. This is the third time Markling, who did not run for re-election in 2011, has won an OSBA Award of Achievement. He will receive the award the OSBA regional conference in the spring.

RANGER ATHLETES MOVING ON IN POSTSEASON COMPETITION

The postseason is under way for high school winter sports teams and congratulations are in order for few Ranger athletes excelling in their sport. Senior diver Mike Pearlman is the first LHS diver in over a decade to qualify for the State Championships meet after finishing seventh at Districts.

LHS' TRIO OF NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS QUALIFY AS FINALISTS

Lakewood High National Merit Semifinalists Ryan Cleary, Derek Dashiell, and Katherine Reading (pictured right to left) have been named 2012 National Merit Finalists after The National Merit Scholarship Program determined which of the 16,000 Semifinalists named in September met the requirements to advance as a Finalist.

4TH & 5TH GRADERS JUMP FOR HEART HEALTH

The district's 4^th and 5^th graders put their best jumping foot forward in an effort to help fight heart disease and stroke when they participated in the district's 14th annual Jump Rope For Heart event at Lakewood High School on Feb. 11. Buoyed by the DJ's energetic songs, the LHS cheerleaders and prize giveaways, the students got in quite a workout while raising money for the American Heart Association.

DISTRICT TEAMS WITH NONPROFIT TO AID REFUGEE STUDENTS

In an effort to help Lakewood’s newest citizens succeed, the Lakewood City Schools and Asian Services in Action Inc. (ASIA), have teamed up to provide tutoring services for the district’s more than 180 refugee students across grades K-12. The program will start out with 40 K-6 students and 40 6-12 students.

KINDERGARTEN PARENT INFO NIGHT FEB. 22

The Lakewood City Schools will be hosting a Kindergarten Parent Information Night for parents of preschoolers interested in learning about the district’s kindergarten program. The event will take place Wednesday, February 22, at 7 p.m. at Hayes Elementary School’s Cafetorium. Hayes is located at 16401 Delaware Ave.

SUPERINTENDENT ANNOUNCES COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MEETINGS

As the Lakewood City Schools enters 2012 facing many opportunities and challenges, Superintendent Jeff Patterson has scheduled a series of community engagement meetings to inform citizens about the goals of the district, its financial standing, and to solicit the input of the community on solving the significant fiscal issues the district faces. The first one will be Wed., Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at Hayes Elementary School.
